Church Fundraising Ideas

Churches often find themselves in need of fundraising beyond the simple act of passing the collection plate around on Sunday. Special fundraisers might be needed for repairs or improvements to the church, to send the church’s youth group on a retreat, to raise money for a member of the congregation in need, or any number of other worthy causes the church is involved with.

One of the biggest decisions is often deciding what type of fundraiser to do. In Ontario, the Beaverdams Church Restoration Committee sold fertilizer with proceeds going towards the restoration of the historical Church.  In the UK, St. Oswald’s Church, holds an annual Spring fair fundraiser. In Allentown, PA, besides making unusual old-world-style pizzas from scratch every Friday, the congregation of St. Stephen of Hungary Parish also decided to remember its roots with bi-monthly fundraiser sales of old-fashioned, hand-stretched Hungarian strudel. Fundraisers by other church groups include bake sales, dinners, rummage sales, product sales, car washes, concerts, plays, and pie auctions.

Easter Egg Surprise – This is a fairly simple fundraising idea. Get a large box, such as a refrigerator box but cut in half. Fill it with colorful Easter grass. Get a bunch of plastic colorful Easter Eggs and fill most of them with a little change, slips of paper that say “Sorry try again.” or Happy Easter!” or some pieces of candy. In one or two of them, put a grand prize such as a $20 bill, a gift certificate, or some other prize. Read more…

Seeds to Grow – Instead of asking for donations from your members and supporters or selling a specific product or service at your next fundraiser, consider giving money away! This relies on your volunteers and supporters individual ideas, talents, dedication, and their willingness to do something special for your organization. Each individual raises funds in a manner that interests them. Read more…

Movie Night – Many organizations rent a movie and hold movie night fundraising events. This works especially well if you have a large room and projection/large screen TV. Make money by charging a single price for the movie and refreshments; provide the movie free but sell refreshments; or charge nothing and just ask for donations. Make sure you select a movie that will be of special interest to your group. Read more…
